Understanding TCM

Traditional Chinese Medicine

What does TCM stand for?
TCM stands for Traditional Chinese Medicine — a complete system of healthcare developed over thousands of years in China. It encompasses acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and other modalities that work together to address the root causes of illness rather than just managing symptoms.
How does Traditional Chinese Medicine work?
TCM is based on the principle that health depends on the balanced flow of vital energy (called Qi) through the body. When that flow is disrupted — by stress, injury, poor diet, or other factors — symptoms emerge. TCM treatment uses acupuncture, herbs, and Chinese Medical Massage to restore that balance and support the body's own healing capacity.
How is TCM different from conventional Western medicine?
Conventional medicine tends to focus on diagnosing and treating specific diseases or symptoms in isolation. TCM looks at the whole person — physical symptoms, emotional state, sleep, digestion, energy, and constitution — to identify and address the underlying pattern of imbalance. The two approaches work well together and are not mutually exclusive.
What does "treating the root cause" mean?
It means looking beyond the presenting symptom to understand why it's happening. For example, two people might both have insomnia, but one is driven by stress and overthinking while the other is related to hormonal changes — and the treatment would differ for each. TCM diagnoses the pattern, not just the complaint.
Is TCM evidence-based?
Many TCM modalities — particularly acupuncture — have been studied extensively. Acupuncture has demonstrated clinical benefit for chronic pain, nausea, headaches, anxiety, and other conditions in peer-reviewed research. Herbal medicine research is growing as well. Dr. Lucy uses compliance-conscious language and supports patients in working alongside their conventional medical providers.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture involves the gentle insertion of very thin, sterile needles at specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system, improve circulation, regulate the stress response, and support the body's natural healing processes. It is a core treatment at South Florida TCM, used for pain, stress, sleep, hormonal concerns, and much more.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are much finer than the needles used for injections — most people feel little to nothing on insertion. Some points may produce a mild dull, achy, or tingling sensation as the needle makes contact with the acupuncture point. This is normal and typically brief. Most patients find sessions deeply relaxing.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. When performed by a licensed, trained practitioner, acupuncture is considered very safe. Dr. Lucy uses single-use, sterile disposable needles exclusively. Serious adverse effects are extremely rare. If you have a bleeding disorder, pacemaker, or are pregnant, let Dr. Lucy know before treatment so the approach can be adjusted appropriately.
What should I expect during a session?
Sessions begin with a conversation about your current symptoms, health history, sleep, stress, and goals. Dr. Lucy will then select a set of acupuncture points — often on the arms, legs, or torso — and the needles are retained for 20–40 minutes while you rest. Most people feel relaxed, warm, or even sleepy during and after treatment.
How long does a session last?
The introductory visit is typically 60–75 minutes, including the intake consultation and first treatment. Follow-up acupuncture sessions are generally 45–60 minutes. Treatment planning, needle placement, and retention time all factor into the overall visit length.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your condition, how long you've had it, and how your body responds. Acute issues may resolve in just a few visits. Chronic conditions typically require 6–10 sessions before a sustained shift is noticeable, with ongoing maintenance often recommended. Dr. Lucy will give you an honest estimate after the intake.
Should I eat before my acupuncture appointment?
Yes — please eat a light meal or snack within two hours before your visit. Coming in on an empty stomach can increase the chance of light-headedness. Avoid heavy meals, alcohol, and strenuous exercise immediately before treatment.

Services

Services & Treatments

What services does South Florida TCM offer?
South Florida TCM provides acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, EM Spectrum Therapy, Meridian Therapy, Foot Activation Therapy, and Chinese Medical Massage. Treatments are combined into personalized plans based on each patient's pattern and goals.
What is Chinese Medical Massage?
Chinese Medical Massage is a traditional Chinese massage therapy that uses meridian-based techniques — quite different from Western relaxation massage. Rather than focusing on muscle relaxation alone, Chinese Medical Massage targets specific acupoints and energy pathways to relieve tension, improve circulation, and support the body's own healing. Each session is 40 minutes. Dr. Lucy has over 20 years of hands-on experience with this modality. Sessions are available standalone ($100) or as an add-on to acupuncture visits.
What is Chinese herbal medicine?
Chinese herbal medicine uses formulas composed of natural plant, mineral, and other substances that have been refined over centuries of clinical use. Dr. Lucy may recommend a personalized herbal formula to support your acupuncture treatment — addressing concerns like sleep, energy, digestion, hormonal balance, inflammation, or recovery.
Can treatments be combined in the same visit?
Yes. Many patients receive acupuncture alongside Chinese Medical Massage, Meridian Therapy, or other supportive modalities within a single session. Dr. Lucy builds a treatment plan that determines which approaches are appropriate and in what sequence, based on your individual pattern and goals.
Does Dr. Lucy offer Chinese Medical Massage?
Yes. Chinese Medical Massage is a traditional Chinese massage therapy that Dr. Lucy offers as both a standalone treatment ($100, 40 minutes) and as an add-on to acupuncture sessions. It uses meridian-based techniques — quite different from Western relaxation massage — targeting specific acupoints and energy pathways to relieve tension, improve circulation, and support healing. Dr. Lucy has over 20 years of hands-on experience with this modality.

Chinese Medical Massage

Chinese Medical Massage

What is Chinese Medical Massage — and how is it different from regular massage?
Chinese Medical Massage is a traditional therapy rooted in the same meridian theory that guides acupuncture. Rather than focusing on general muscle relaxation, it targets specific acupoints and energy pathways to move stagnant qi and blood, relieve tension, and support the body's natural healing. It is more therapeutic and pattern-specific than a typical Western relaxation massage.
What does a session feel like?
Most patients find Chinese Medical Massage to be deeply therapeutic — a focused, purposeful pressure along meridian pathways that releases tension you may not have realized you were carrying. It is not a light, surface-level massage. Dr. Lucy adjusts pressure based on your comfort and what your body needs.
How long is a session?
Chinese Medical Massage sessions are 40 minutes. This focused timeframe allows Dr. Lucy to address the key meridian pathways and tension patterns without overwhelming the body. Sessions can be booked standalone or added to an acupuncture visit.
Can Chinese Medical Massage be combined with acupuncture?
Yes — and this is one of the most effective combinations at South Florida TCM. Massage releases soft-tissue tension and opens surface meridian pathways, while acupuncture works at a deeper energetic and neurological level. Together they create a more complete and lasting treatment effect.
How many sessions will I need?
For acute tension or stress relief, a single session can provide noticeable benefit. Chronic pain, long-standing tension patterns, or stress-related conditions typically respond best to a series of 6–10 sessions. Dr. Lucy will recommend a plan based on your goals and how your body responds.
What should I wear?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the arms, legs, and back. Unlike some forms of massage that use oils and require disrobing, Chinese Medical Massage is typically performed through clothing or with a drape — focusing on meridian points and pressure techniques rather than skin-level manipulation.

Conditions

Conditions Treated

What conditions do you treat?
South Florida TCM provides care for a wide range of conditions including neuropathy and nerve pain, arthritis and joint pain, chronic pain and fatigue, sleep disorders and insomnia, stress and anxiety, women's health concerns (hormonal imbalances, fertility, menopause), and men's health concerns (ED, low libido, prostate issues, male infertility, chronic fatigue). If you don't see your condition listed, contact us — we may still be able to help.
Can acupuncture work alongside my current medications or doctor?
Yes — acupuncture is frequently used alongside conventional medical care, psychiatric medications, prescribed pain management, and other treatments. Please bring a list of your current medications and supplements to your first visit so Dr. Lucy can tailor treatment appropriately and safely. She does not ask you to stop any existing care.
Can acupuncture help with chronic pain?
Chronic pain is one of the most studied applications of acupuncture. It may help by stimulating the nervous system, reducing inflammatory signaling, and improving circulation to affected areas. Dr. Lucy treats back pain, neck pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, and arthritic pain as part of a whole-person care approach.
Can acupuncture help with anxiety and mental health?
Acupuncture has demonstrated effects on the autonomic nervous system — promoting the parasympathetic (calm, rest-and-digest) state and reducing cortisol. It is used at South Florida TCM for generalized anxiety, panic, stress, burnout, and the physical symptoms stress produces. It works well alongside therapy, medication, and other mental health support.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Acupuncture can be safe during pregnancy when performed by a trained practitioner who understands pregnancy-specific protocols. Certain acupuncture points are contraindicated during pregnancy and are avoided. Please inform Dr. Lucy if you are pregnant or trying to conceive so your treatment plan can be adjusted accordingly.
Do you treat conditions that aren't listed on the website?
The conditions listed represent common presentations seen in practice, but TCM can address a much broader range of concerns. If you have a condition that isn't listed — digestive issues, headaches, skin conditions, autoimmune support, or general wellness goals — contact us to discuss whether care at South Florida TCM is appropriate for you.
